Even if they are upset about the taxes, the vegetable oil is/was taxed when it was purchased, so they can go fly a kite. I'd say more, but I'm pretty dumbstruck by this entire thing.
If it was a general food item it probably wasn't taxed and even so, it isn't the same as the motor fuel tax.
That being said, it's still stupid. Very few people are really doing this, so forcing them to pay motor fuel taxes is merely a drop in the bucket for the state's budget.
Until we have the ability to pull up to a station and fill our tanks with Wesson or Mazola, going after a few green-minded citizens seems rather frivolous. How much exactly is it costing the state to have people track these folks down and make them pay?

This blew my mind so bad that I probably didn't word it all correctly. I'm with Art on this. Going to charge a boat tax to those without boats? How about the smoking tax and alcohol tax to those who don't smoke and/or drink?
Do they hit people who don't have cars with this motor fuel tax?
If you're not using gas, you shouldn't have to pay a gas tax. Simple as that in my mind, and seems really stupid the government would waste the time and money to try to track down someone like this couple, and then try to tax them for something they don't use.
Makes no sense!
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
-Oh, here he comes. What is it now, Quimby?
-Nothing, nothing. Only the, er, city has just passed another tax on puffy directing pants.
-But I don't wear puffy pants!
-I meant a tax on not wearing puffy pants.
I don't see how the government can even stretch this claim. How do they define motor fuel? Unless the definition explicitly covers vegetable oil or throws it under a blanket statement, they have no legal back-up for pursuing this tax. And "stuff that makes to car go" doesn't count as an umbrella statement.
