I don't celebrate St. Patrick's day so much as I celebrate my good fortune at having Irish ancestors who made the difficult decision to pack up and leave Ireland for Canada at the turn of the 20th century. My great-great grandparents hailed from Limerick, Ireland. They had nine children. Of those nine, five died before the age of 22. Only two of the nine outlived both parents. It was a tough life. Their decision to come here to Vancouver is something I can't be grateful enough for. So, the least I can do is give thanks with a toast...

My great-grandparents also immigrated to America, passing through Ellis Island from Castlebar, Ireland around 1920.

My grandmother said that my great grandfather would often drink a warm Guinness for breakfast... with a raw egg in it. Mmmm, Guinness omelet.

I'm not Irish, but I had 3 of those yesterday morning (doing a very English thing in watching the Premiership games in the early morning) and 4 last night. Guinness has to be the greatest globally circulated drink in the world.
