He's off to a poor start this season, but he's only had one season with an ERA over 4, and he pitches 210+ innings every single year, without missing a game. Roy Oswalt he's not, but I'd much rather have Zito than 90% of the FA pitchers over the past few seasons... the ones who are awesome for three months, break, then sit on the DL for two months.
this has some merit. however, if i was a team that was trying to win in the post season, i'd prefer a fragile stud to a consistent mediocrity.

Really? What about the Cards last year?
what about them? carpenter's a monster. we're talking about zito being worth the money, no? he got paid like an ace, and the only argument for him is that he's durable? the cards HAD an ace last year, and he was good.
if i was the GM of the yankees, and i could pick zito or harden for my team right now, i'd pick harden. sheets vs. willis (196, 236, 223 IP past 3 seasons)? sheets. beckett vs. buehrle? beckett. etc.
now if we're talking regular season and my rotation consisted of harden, sheets, and beckett as my 1 2 3 guys, i'd be sweating bullets all season.

The Giants don't have to worry about winning in the post season...

i agree, and i wasn't defending the giants' signing of zito.
