CINCINNATI -- Dave Miley, who finished last season as the Reds' interim manager, will keep his job.
The Reds called a 9 p.m. news conference Thursday to announce that Miley, 41, will receive a one-year contract with an option for 2005. He becomes the 57th manager in Reds history, the 47th since 1900 and the 23rd to take the job without previous Major League managing experience.

Miley was among a group of finalists that included Pittsburgh Pirates player development director Brian Graham, former Chicago White Sox manager Jerry Manuel and Tampa Bay Devil Rays bench coach John McLaren. General manager Dan O'Brien announced that field on Nov. 18 and interviewed each candidate with assistant general manager Brad Kullman and farm director Tim Naehring.

Though O'Brien said upon being hired on Oct. 27 that he wanted Cincinnati's next manager to have extensive managerial experience and broad teaching skills -- a description that fit Miley nicely -- more than two weeks passed before Thursday's decision was announced.

Miley's hiring culminated his 24-year professional baseball career, which he has spent entirely with the Reds organization.

By only giving him a one year contract...looks like he is still on a short leash....but still a good move by the Reds.... :-)
