Are there any fa 1st basemen left? Ah yes, Mr Viagra himself. I think the deal could be a good one for both sides, but Giambi really didn't look like a 1st basemen (or the hitter he was before, but I digress) last season. With Bernie and Giambi both at pivotal positions in the field and the lineup getting Sheffield won't help them defensively. Their pitching will be great again though.

I haven't heard much about Colon lately. Maybe the Yanks are reconsidering?
I don't really think that they have been sold on Colon as there are worries about his physique. It all came down to whether the difference between Vaz and Colon justified giving up Johnson. I loved Johnson but I would much rather have Vaz.

What makes you think the Yankees aren't going to go ahead and get Colon? Was there an article that I missed somewhere? It would not surprise me in the least for the Yankees to turn around right now and sign Colon on top of everything else they've done.
I doubt it. I fully expect them to sign Petitte, though.
I agree. I expect them to sign Pettitte. They don't really need Colon. I can see a rotation of Mussina, Vaz, Pettitte, Contreras, and pick 1 of Lieber, Wells, or Weaver. You could do much worse than that.

That's an understatement!
But, I disagree; Johnson isn't worth the difference between Colon and Vaz.

An argument could be made for either side on that 1. Like I said, Johnson is solid. All things equal, I would take Vaz. Unfortunately, all things are not equal here.

1b isn't a pivotal position as far as defense. It and leftfield, are by far the least important defensive positions.

The Expos save a ton of money. Johnson moves up in the 1B rankings, as he'll get the ABs he was missing in NY. Hopefully he'll slide in most drafts, and be a good late pick.
Most importantly, throw a few more Expos ping pong balls into the Guerrero lottery. This trade could give the Expos the payroll flexibility they need to keep him.
If they let Guerrero go without a fight after this? Shame on MLB front office. As if more shame is possible surrounding the whole Expos debacle.
(On a related side note, reports around the Bay Area are that San Francisco went after both Sheffield and Sexson. They are quietly trying to find another big bat that will complement Bonds. If these reports are true, I think it's safe to assume they've at least made gestures towards Guerrero too.)

I agree with everything that you said except the AB's. When healthy, he was going to get a ton of AB's in NY. Whether it be at 1B or DH, he would have gotten them. The problem with him has been staying healthy.
Great Trade for the Yankees. Vazquez is one of the Top 15 arms in baseball (and that's as an Expo).
My prediction: 20 wins, 3.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP. The guy has far superior stuff than Pettitte (who won 20+ this past year).
So what if Nick Johnson is patient and can take a walk.....So could Jeremy Giambi and he's now out of a job. You don't fulfill potential by being hurt all the time. And it's potential in Johnson vs. a proven innings eater in Vazquez.
