Whose name do you want to pencil into the right field slot. I'm looking for logical choices considering D-backs payroll, offensive/defensive needs, mentality, etc. Is there someone out there in free agency? Maybe a temporary solution to hold over the fort until Chad Tracy becomes acquainted with the OF and gets his shot. Or should Bautista get another chance to claim the position?
Well since they will already have Cinton, Kata, Hammock and I am guessing either Casey Fossum, Stephen Randolph, John Patterson, Andrew Good, Edgar Gonzalez and Oscar Villarreal in the rotation ... Might as well bring up Tracy and Hairston. and let them all continue to develop together ...
but, They will probably sign a free agent OF cheap in the spring. Alot depends upon them unloading Mantei...
Here's an interesting tidbit I just came across on EV Tribune's website:
Arizona, which declined a $5 million option on Batista, has about $2 million to $3 million of room in its 2004 budget.
They go on to say that resigning Batista or Baerga is extremely unlikely because of that, and they'll likely end up pursuing a budget veteran starting pitcher once the arbitration deadline passes. Baerga not coming back doesn't surprise, but I still had hope that resigning Batista following the Schilling trade would happen. Like you said, unless Mantei's salary is dumped somewhere....

Nothing signed yet .. If he must leave the NL ... I hope its Texas, Just don't let them sign Tomko, what ever they do, I hope they don't make that mistake ....

With four months before Opening Day, the Diamondbacks aren't panicking about two empty spots in the back of their revamped rotation.
They would feel comfortable if they settle on two candidates currently within the organization.
"I think we feel pretty good about it," General Manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said Wednesday night. "Someone could emerge.
"We will continue to look from the outside, but maybe rather later than sooner."
With free-agent pitcher Miguel Batista highly likely to sign a multiyear contract elsewhere, the Diamondbacks could wait until after the Dec. 20 deadline for tendering contracts to all players to see how much the quality of the free-agent pool swells.
Garagiola pointed to last year's market, which saw late signees Kenny Rogers (Minnesota), Esteban Loaiza (Chicago White Sox) and Rod Beck (San Diego) sign late in the off-season and then pitch well.
"Every year, there are players like that," Garagiola said.
The Diamondbacks' internal pool of potential candidates for the rotation includes left-handed newcomer Casey Fossum from Boston, but Fossum might be better served in the bullpen.
The addition of reliever Brandon Lyon from Boston has opened the possibility for ironman Oscar Villarreal to return to the rotation, although that consideration is in the exploratory stage.
Villarreal, 22, set a National League rookie record with 86 appearances last season but was an exceptional starter for most of his minor league career.
He could compete with John Patterson, Andrew Good and Edgar Gonzalez, who all have major league experience, along with Casey Daigle and Phil Stockman (each on the 40-man roster for the first time), 18-year-old sensation Adriano Rosario (119 strikeouts and a 2.86 ERA for Class A South Bend) and left-hander Mike Gosling once Gosling fully recovers from left shoulder surgery.
Garagiola spoke Tuesday night with agent Martin Arburua to reaffirm that Batista, the Diamondbacks' most versatile pitcher in his three seasons, is too pricey.
"I didn't want to give them false hope," Garagiola said.
The forecast looks better for backup infielder Carlos Baerga, who could be re-signed by Sunday.
"I'm starting to feel optimistic about this," Garagiola said of Baerga, who set a franchise record with 19 pinch-hits. "I want Carlos Baerga back, and I never wavered on this."
Good to hear the optimism regarding Baerga. This would be a smart move not only to continue having his bat off the bench, but to play intermittently with Kata at second base. I hope they don't overpay a la McCracken.
The worries regarding the overuse of Villarreal during 2003 will increase exponentially if he becomes a starter. (Give Fossum a chance.)
