The goal of this league is to find a bunch of players who are interested in being pretty active, but you certainly don't have to go crazy to be competitive. We use some non-traditional stats that hopefully give a slightly more accurate real-life baseball experience. Hitting stats include (in addition to the standard RBI, Runs, BA, SB) Strike Outs, Slugging and On Base Percentage.
Pitching stats include (in addition to ERA, WHIP, Wins, Ks, Saves) Losses and Holds.

Just a little bit about these stats. I think that SLG and OBP are important hitter stats. They are much more indicative of a player’s offensive ability than simply HRs and BA. It does mean that a player who walks a lot and hits some doubles to go with their HRs is going to be much more valuable than a big Strike Out or HR kind of player. By including Strike Outs we are creating a league where small ball wins games. In 5x5 you live and die by the HR – here the HR is just one part of the big picture. Keep this in mind when you draft and when you make players moves.

For pitchers it is much the same thing. Holds are a middle reliever only stat. And while I don’t think they are the best stat in the world. I do like that it forces teams to think of more than just stockpiling closers. If your team wins the holds category it is the same as winning the saves category. As with real baseball, middle relief counts. As for counting Losses – I think it is important to balance out the randomness of the Wins category. As any baseball statistician can tell you, a pitcher's Wins total is based a lot on luck and I think the same can be said for Losses. For that reason I created the Losses category to even out the chance of being unluckly.

Please let me know if you are interested and I can send you a link to the site and give you any additional info you might need.

Thanks,

-- Josh
