Well, I haven't read through the entire thread, but I did notice you and others mentioning 'fitness for fitness sake' a few times. If you've never done this you're going to have a hard time starting. I've had trouble with this as well, so I've found alternatives. I'm not overweight (actually underweight right now), but we all know the importance of exercise. Get people to bike, hike, play tennis or raquetball, etc. with. If you have kids this is easy. Get the wife involved too. It's really easy when you get into a groove of activity without feeling like you're breaking your back or doing something you'd rather not do.
