2 questions about draft strategies

Postby suckerpuncher » Fri Mar 09, 2007 4:26 pm

I've got 2 "short" question regarding draft strategies.

1. We start a 16 team points keeper league this year. But you can only keep player who were drafted after the 8th round. And to keep him you have to give up the pick from the round before you drafted him (if I want to keep my 10th round pick I have to give up my 9th round pick next year).
How does this affect the draft after round 8?

Should I take younger players and even reach for guys like C. Young? Or should I forget about age and take the best available and only consider age when 2 guys with the same skill are available?

And what guys would be good targets for keepers and in about which round (in a 16 teamer)?
And we have 4 DL spots so will be out this year and can be grabbed after round 8 and then be stashed on DL this year and be a good keeper for next year? Liriano, Martinez?

2. In a normal H2H league that has BB for hitters and L for pitchers as extra cats to the normal 5x5 who should I take with the 3rd pick overall?
I'm leaning toward A-Rod. But what about Santana, Reyes, Soriano, Howard etc. if they are still there?

I know it's a bit more then just 2 "short" questions but I really appreciate any input.

Thanks in advance.

1. Try to win your league this year. If you can't decide between 2 players then you take the higher upside guy for the future. The biggest change is that in the later rounds you should be targetting young guys more than potential backups.

2. Take a slugger. Howard, Ortiz whoever. ARod only walks 80 times a year so he's not the greatest value in that league, pitching is devalued some. Reyes doesn't walk enough. Howard walked 108 times last year and thats likely to spike as people pitch around him more and more.
