My first post and first baseball Fantasy League question?

Postby Onenutkruker » Thu Mar 08, 2007 4:35 pm

This is my first baseball fantasy league I have joined so here it goes.
I am in a 12 man head to head league where you play same team
all week. The draft is this Sunday. We are playing with 20 players (9 starters with dh and other ten on bench) and 1 pitching staff. If I am calulating correctly it seems to me that under the scoring system we have the pitching staffs projections of Mets, Red Sox, Cubs,Yankees and a few others would get me an avg of of14-16 pts a game ( I divided there total projected yearly outpout by 162) and say a player like Pujols who is projected at 545 pts would avg me 3 pts per game. Is it safe to say that a top notch staff is 5 times more valuable then a premium player? I also know how my friends are and hardly any will be taking staffs first. I think it is the right move. Now which staff should I take?
Which is the best staff to take? I am leaning towards Red Sox.
Scoring: Head-to-Head, Points Based System.
Ties go to the team with better R.

no thats not safe to say. while the staff will avg like 14-15 a game, all the other teams will also avg a high amount of pts as well. you have to calculate the difference between the top pitching staff, the average pitching staff, and the worst pitching staff before you can make that determination.

I went on 2007 projections and they projected Top staff RedSox at 2511pts/162 for 15.5 a game and the worst staff the Royals at 1506/162 for9 pts a game. In my case even I picked 12th ranked staff which is say Dodgers at 2134/162 for 13.2 a game it is only difference of 3pts per game so in the grand scheme of things I really should totally change my thinking and pick pitching a lot later? Lets say 3pts per game for a week of 5-6 games or 15-18 pts is that a decent amount in a weekly head to head?
Once again first time playing any fantasy so all new to me thanks again.

:-? I've never seen a league where you draft an entire staff, like you do with a defense in fantasy football. :-?

I think you are undervalueing Pujols. In the points leagues that I play in Pujols usually puts up 650+ points a year or 4.5 ppg.

And you need to look at the diffence between staffs. The Red Sox have a good staff but how do they compare to the Mets, A's or Yankees. I have never drafted staffs before but I would have to think that it compares to drafting Defense in football. Usually best to wait until the middle/end of the draft because the difference between the #1 and the #10 isn't much. Plus they change so often that they are unreliable. I would think it would be better to wait and draft a couple that have potential than draft one early and hope they pan out. Florida, Cleveland and the Dodgers would probably be good late picks.

Not sure if you are more familiar with fantasy football than baseball, but a system like that will reduce the pitching staff to the equivalent of a team defense in football. You would be better off picking one very late and then grabbing a waiver wire staff that has a 3-game series that week against a team like the D-Rays or Padres.

I've never thought of that, switching staffs make sense if there is an avg staff out there playing a couple poor teams in a week.
