Curt Schilling agreed to give up his no-trade protection as part of his deal in the Red Sox.
In return, the half of his $12 million salary that was supposed to be deferred money will be paid to Schilling in 2004. The Red Sox have never given a player a no-trade clause and it's especially important that they don't do so now, as Manny Ramirez has language in his contract that would grant him the privilege if the club extended the provision to another player. Yeah, that was apparently a big sticking point in the negotiations - Schilling wanted assurances that he would not have to relocate his family yet again if Boston decided to trade him, and Boston couldn't afford triggering the doomsday clause in Manny's contract that would handcuff them with respect to booting him out as soon as someone (ideally the Rangers) decides to take on his salary. I'm sure Theo had to give Schilling some kind of handshake agreement that he would not be traded.
