Help with strategy...

Postby Bigball » Thu Mar 08, 2007 10:13 am

I just joined a league to help a friend out.
It is a 6 player keeper with
Weeky ( not daily) lineups changes.

I have been in dynasty leagues but never in a 6 player keeper that only sets the line up once a week.

there are 14 teams ( possibly 16)

The draft is this weekend..
here are the rosters
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3OF, DH, 4SP and 2RP. ( 16 total)
6 on the bench

here are the points.

Scoring for Batting Categories
1B - Singles 1 point
2B - Doubles 2 points
3B - Triples 3 points
BB - Walks (Batters) 1 point
HR - Home Runs 4 points
KO - Strikeouts (Batter) -1 point
R - Runs 1 point
RBI - Runs Batted In 1 point
SB - Stolen Bases 2 points
Scoring for Pitching Categories
CG - Complete Games 5 points
ER - Earned Runs -1 point
HD - Holds 3 points
INN - Innings 1 point
K - Strikeouts (Pitcher) 1 point
RL - Relief Losses -3 points
S - Saves 10 points
SO - Shutouts 10 points
W - Wins 10 points

SO are -1, Saves 10.

What should be my strategy going into this draft. I have only been drafting prospects for a few years and athough I know my ball not real familiar with a strategy to win in this format.

Any thoughts, advice..

Thanks

There's no penalty if a SP gets a loss?

I guess one piece of advice is that since there appears to be no P slots, I'd gun for any possible closers or setup guys that may also carry SP eligibility. It's a nice way to maximize points from relievers while utilizing SP slots on days you may not have someone starting. ;-D An example of this last year would be Jon Papelbon who had SP/RP eligibility. A possible candidate this season could be Kerry Wood.

A locked starting lineup for the entire week is tough because you can't properly manage your team throughout the week.

With that being said, go for players that have full time jobs not prospects that will be platooning for the entire year. Too risky...

Other than that... There are about 30 MLB Players that will get you 20 or more SB's and only 10 of those are 40+ thieves. You have to start weekly 9 position players. I would tend to think if you had three basestealers from the top 30 players in your lineup you would be good to go... One of them has to be a top 10 bagger though.

I woud say that out of your top 10 picks... You should go after 6 position players, 3SP's and one RP. You can always find cheap saves on the waiver wire.

Your top 10 picks might look something like this:

POWER (Any top 10 power hitter)
5 tool guy (Jeter/Rollins/Hamley Ramirez)
SP
POWER (Jim Thome/Adam Dunn)
SPEED (Juan Pierre)
SP
RP (Top 15 Closer)
5 tool (Alex Rios) or POWER (Raul Ibanez/Nick Swisher)
SP (Chris Capuano/Josh Beckett/Barry Zito/Andy Pettite)
POWER (Patt Burrell/Josh Willingham/Michael Cuddyer)

The goal is to try and score as many points in each category as possible. Do not punt any one category. Get pitchers on good teams that tend to have winning records....

I have been out all day so thank you for your reply.

I just found out that we play 13 players then 3 players what ever we want.

That can be 3 SP,3RP 3 OF, what ever combination we choose.

Closers get 10 points for a save, 0 points for a blown save.

I am thinking of cornering the market on closers.
Nathan, Sheets, Ryan, Mariano?
If I get 5 saves a week that is 50 plus points.

Not sure...

Thoughts?
