Cutting players can be one of the toughest parts of a manager's job. Who is the manager with the following takes on player cuts?

"Son, we'd like to keep you around this season but we're going to try and win a pennant."

"When I was managing ... in the old days, the toughest thing was to cut people. What I did before making a cut was to check the guy's room carefully for a gun first. You never could tell about some of those birds.''

And, on being "cut" himself:

"They told me my services were no longer desired because they wanted to put in a youth program as an advance way of keeping the club going. I'll never make the mistake of being seventy again."

Nope - good guess (going by age?), but the "old days" in this case are a little bit older still.

How about Leo Durocher?

No, not Durocher. This all-time great managed one season more than Durocher, one less than Anderson, and had a lower winning percentage than either.

I thought I had posted this guess before, but Casey Stengel was up there in years when he stopped managing.
