Cutting players can be one of the toughest parts of a manager's job. Who is the manager with the following takes on player cuts?
"Son, we'd like to keep you around this season but we're going to try and win a pennant."
"When I was managing ... in the old days, the toughest thing was to cut people. What I did before making a cut was to check the guy's room carefully for a gun first. You never could tell about some of those birds.''
And, on being "cut" himself:
"They told me my services were no longer desired because they wanted to put in a youth program as an advance way of keeping the club going. I'll never make the mistake of being seventy again."
