But anyway, did anyone actually read this? Or maybe I'm reading it backwards but I don't think they are preventing media coverage of violence. Although their decision in light of Rodney King-like incidents has some scary implications.
they outlaw coverage by anyone not approved by the govt as a journalist (read: whoever the hell they want). as i read it, joe schmoe is not allowed to videotape or photograph violent acts and nobody but govt-approved people are allowed to post any pictures of such acts on the www.
The point I was making is that I really, really disliked the French too. Then I went to France and actually met some French people. The people are cool. The people like Americans. The people are a lot like us. They have some weird ideas but then so do people in New England as far as I'm concerned. They think I have weird ideas too. It all works out.
I'm just saying that you shouldn't throw all Frenchmen out with the bathwater because they have a weird form of government. Overall the French are great people.
And all things considered, as good as French wine is, I'll take California wine over French any day. We make some pretty good stuff here in the States.

And right now in the US a guy from San Francisco has been in jail since August because the government doesn't approve of him as a journalist. I'm as outraged over this as the next guy, but why be mad when it happens in France and not care if it happens here?
Are you talking about the guy with the videotape? Or a different story?
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

I studied abroad in France and my ex is French. Definitely not as bad as the generic perception we have of them here on this side of the pond (or even in England and in Spain for that matter). However, people in Paris or the real snobbish ones down on the Cote d'Azur fit more of your stereotypical French person who thinks the world revolves around French culture and way of life. What I've found is that French just like to poke fun at American lifestyle for being too hectic for their own liking.
At any rate, it's interesting as to why the French government would put in place a ban on citizen reporting on violence, but I guess that's what happens when you have a culture that doesn't mind porn on mainstream TV...but can be quite put off even by a little entertainment violence.

War with the French? That would last as long as the Royal's chance of getting to playoffs this year. The white flag would be up before our planes got there.
Ah, I just can't help taking shots at the French, it's too easy.
And lastly, I have nothing against the French in reality. I like to make jokes on their behalf, including but not limited to their stereotypical cowardly outlook and poor war record, snobbishness, accent and government. Overall though, I'd like to visit France some day as it seems like a unique place with a vibrant culture if poor legislation.
