Windows XP help

Postby Grouperman941 » Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:53 pm

For ACS and the other techies:

My computer with XP MCE has stopped recognizing my DVR-RW as a DVD RW if ther e is a DVD in it. It switches to CD-RW, which means I can't burn any DVDs.

It is not a question of the DVD format. I was only half wa through a big box when the problem hapened, so I'd written to these DVDs before.

I thought my original Sony DVD-RW crapped out, so I got a better ASUS one. Still did the same thing.

I tried a couple of registry things, like deleting 'filters' and changing the value in the dvd area to 'recordable'.

Any ideas before I try a reinstall?

Thanks!
Be excellent to each other.

Have you installed any software lately? Also, is you Windows XP fully updated? There was a fix (in SP2 I believe) for the format driver which was using the wrong block size which is why it defaults back to CD-RW. If you installed any burning software lately the file UDFS.sys probably got overwritten with an old version. If you have not installed anything recently and have fully updated Windows I don't have a guess as to why it would happen suddenly.

If this is the second piece of hardware that has done this same thing, to me it points to a problem with 3rd party software. If you happened to recently install or uninstall a program similar to Nero, or any other program for that matter, it could corruption of XPs auto run feature.

I believe this is the correct fix:

Thanks.

Fade2White,

That utility locates a problem but is unable to repair it.

I had been downloading dvd authoring tools to try when the problem started, so I think I can assume I messed up that driver file.

Amazinz, how can I fix that? Do I need to download SP2 all over again?

Copy and paste the utilities message upon diagnosing the problem.

Did you make sure you deleted both upper and lower filters?

What could help is to go to the site of whatever media program you were using that could have caused the problem. Search for some sort of full clean install. I bet that does the trick.

I definitely removed all filters I could recognize as filters, upper and lower.

I have now uninstalled all of the programs I was messing around with and then installed the NERO lite that came with the new DVD-RW. Same problem. I kept my main software -- WinDVD -- intact.

The NERO utility reads the drive for what it is. It is just that Windows sees it as CD only.

[I don't know if this could be related, but my Windows Movie Maker, which I use for certain things, started crashing out at the same time this problem happened, assumedly because I had too much DirectShow stuff on my system.]

[Jahshaka also stopped rendering on me, but that should not have effected the drive, right?]

Yeah, the diagnostic doesn't give me much help.

Both upper and lower filters should be under this registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

If you can't find any more, I can't think of anything else to do. The only other remedy I can think of is for you to thoroughly uninstall all of your other cd/dvd recording and writing programs, then recheck the registries, then reinstall your desired programs. I'm sure that this is 3rd party related, but I'm not sure exactly how. If that doesn't help, try googling for some tech support forums. I only dabble alittle - those guys do a lot. Sorry I'm not any more of a help.

Good luck ;-D
