I think a Teddy vs Bonds vs Musial debate would be great. I'll let some else take my position (Bonds). One debate a month is enough for me! :-D

Hmm... another debate? ;-)

Apperently, some baseball fans are not concerned about the greatest ever at any position not having good defense and at least decent running speed. Arlo, Didn't you vote for Rogers Hornsby, too? :-D

I do see another debate! Perhpas Arlo vs efda? ;-D

Here's what Hornsby himself had to say on this very subject...

"I have to laugh when they rap Williams' fielding. His fielding? Defense becomes unimportant when you have a hitting talent like his."

By the way, Cool Papa Bell deserves to be on the list of options as well. :-)

Of course Hornsby would say that. His defense was even worse than
Teddy's defense!! I guess all those line drives that got by Teddy aren't important. I just believe that it a player is to be "annointed" as the greatest ever at a postion they should have good defense and have good speed. Mike Piazza is the greatest hitting catcher in major league history but is the he the greatest catcher ever? No, because his defense has never been very good. Bench, Berra, Campanella, Rodriguez, Cochrane had much better defense. The same with Teddy. He is the greatest hitting left fielder. However, Bonds advantage in defense and baserunning far exceed Teddy's advantage in hitting. Teddy is not that much better a hitter than Bonds, anyway...

Maybe this would make a fun debate after all. The trouble is that the two are close enough that the whole issue really hinges on where you choose to place your priorities...:-)

Good defense and good speed? It's left field. It's a hitter's position. It's where you put Dave Kingman and Frank Howard. In any case, Bonds isn't an all-time great fielder, either (Bill James gives him a B-, I believe).

(Besides, didn't you say Frank Thomas is easily a top 5 1B?)

Anyway, what this discussion needs is some Musial supporters... :-D
