SoCal woman's stomach ache turns out to be surprise baby

ORANGE, Calif. A 39-year-old Garden Grove woman went to an emergency room with a stomach ache and ended up with a baby.

Hospital officials say April Barnum didn't know she was pregnant when she came to an emergency room near her home this week, but gave birth to a full-term, 7-pound, 7-ounce boy by C-section.

The 420-pound woman says her size kept her and others from realizing she was carrying the baby.

Barnum says if the baby kicked, she didn't feel it.

Doctors saw the baby when they took X-rays of her abdominal area.

She was sent to U-C-I for prenatal testing, where doctors determined there was a healthy fetus ready to be delivered.

The baby is named Walter Edwards, after Barnum's fiance.

Wouldn't you be a little concerned when you haven't had your "menstrual cycle" in 9 months?

As a side-note, I am from Orange, California.
You have no frame of reference, Donny. You're like a child who walks into the middle of a movie...

I have no reason to believe this is true, but is just a guess....maybe when you pack on that kind of weight, your menstrual cycle is far from routine. Perhaps with that kind of weight she simply went months without a period in the past...I don't know if this was the case, nor do I know if it is possible, but I'd venture a guess that it is.

Actually, this can happen.

My sister in law had the same thing happen. She was MAYBE 110 lbs.

She'd had ovarian cysts and the doctor had trouble treating them, which resulted in her not having a period for over a year and a half. She'd started working a desk job, so a little weight gain was no shocker. They have pics of her in a bikini in a pool two weeks before the birth. My sis in law partied like a ROCKSTAR at that time too. Drank, smoked, and ummm....did other stuff if you catch my drift.

She came home one day, puked and had stomach cramps for a few hours, drove herself to the hospital, and had my niece, Lauren, who is now 7, and as healthy and smart as anyone could hope for. I've even taught her to mock her other uncle for losing to me in our keeper league each year. "Uncle Bobby, you stink and so do the Mets!" was one of my faves. ;-D

My wife got the call at work from her Mom, "You're gonna be an aunt!" in that motherly, ticked off tone. My wife replied, "Great, which idiot sister of mine just told you she's pregnant?" Her Mom said, "No....you're going to be an aunt RIGHT NOW. Come to the hospital now." They ended up doing emergency baby shopping at WalMart at 4am.

So, it IS possible, just very unusual.....
