As a history / english teacher I would like to officially start a petition to remove wikipedia from the internet. It is not a reliable source of scholarly information and yet no matter what i tell my students, that is the first place they go to find out info.
It has gotten to the point, where I will nto allow any research to be done on Wikipedia, and if I see wikipedia on any of their computers during classtime, I walk over and turn their computer off.
One other note, I assigned a essay on the rise of Adolf Hitler a few weeks ago, and I had a student turn in word for word a few pages copied and pasted from wikipedia.
When I confronted the student about it, he replied. "How would you know, you said you don't use wikipedia!?!"
I know Wikipedia is not perfect. Any Wiki has problems given the way the community creates the content. Especially for newer items or when you look at controversial topics. Some articles have tags like: "The neutrality and factual accuracy of this article are disputed."
And indeed, it shouldn't be standard for real research.
But if you compare the accuracy of Wikipedia to the accuracy of the Internet as a whole, I'll take Wikipedia almost every day.

Smart#%$
Wow.. that takes me back. What a punk. Slap him with the dreaded F-!
Our history teacher doesn't like us to use it either, because anyone can edit it, but the fact is it is a great resource to find out general things about a topic. If there is a [citation needed] thing next to a sentence then I ignore that sentence.
Wikipedia has been pretty much banned by my University. If anyone turns in a paper and makes the mistake of citing Wikipedia, it's a guaranteed zero. I like to use it as a quick guide when starting internet research to perhaps point me in the direction of some helpful websites.
Also, does anyone else watch the Colbert Report? He's telling people to get on there and change stuff all the time.
I'll claim responsibility for adding "Thunder Matt" as one Matt Murton's nicknames in his Wikipedia entry, but some complete stranger added a link to our blog.
