I live in Va., about 60 miles from Richmond. I just bought a house and five acres of land for $150,000. If you have the green to drop on a five bedroom, do it outside of town and commute. You'll get a great deal because of the crappy housing market. The money you invest will certainly go up as people try to escape the urban sprawl. There's little to no crime out in the country. The commute will be the only headache. Enjoy the beauty of Virginia without the headache of the city. Welcome to America, and the great state of Virginia. Oh yeah...buy the property on the east or north side of the city. The value of your property will skyrocket, as you will be located b/t either D.C. or Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, etc.), both of which are growing substantially.
