you're argument comes down to something like Reyes + Aram or Rollins + Utley. Since you can for a pure slugger in the 3rd who will hit more HRs than the 5 toler you take in the first, I think Reyes provides his value.
I always say that the most important guys in FB are the SB specialists who dont hut you too much in the power hitters departments (HR/RBI) so I consider the likes or Reyes, Crawford and to a lesser extent, Rollins, gold dust.

I wouldn't even come close to doing that. H-Ram has less power, has less of a track record, is in a worse park, is on a worse team. He did steal more than Rollins last year but he's simply way too risky to be chosen over the other top SS's.

I agree, H-Ram will have to do it again before I'm a true believer. The others are proven and less risky. I'd take Reyes, Rollins and Furcal in that order.
Depending on who you're passing up instead of Reyes. I wouldn't take Reyes top 5. I'd see taking him 6-8.

If you can get Rollins with a mid to late third round pick, then I like the concept here. The real question, though, is where will you be able to draft Rollins.
If you're talking about needing to take Rollins in the second round, then I would rather have Reyes+Bay over Utely+Rollins (just an example).
Point is, I wouldn't like this strategy if it forced you to reach for Rollins, even though he is one of my favorite perenially underrated guys (although, if he's going in round 2, he's not really underrated anymore).
I also like the idea of snagging Furcal later and having him put up comparable #'s.

This is my strategy. Hanley was comparable to Reyes in everything except RBI. I'll take an elite hitter in the 1st round and Hanley in the 3rd, then you have the extra RBI covered, and a guy fully capable of putting up Reyes numbers 2 rounds cheaper.

Bingo. SS is deep, and Reyes is a waste of a first pick, IMHO. I like your draft strategy mentioned here, OldStyle.

I wouldn't say SS is deep, but I do think Rollins, Furcal and H-Ram are interchangable.
Sold post Old Spice ..
It sent me thinking last night, wondering if I could get Rollins in the 4th.
I like to map out my first 3 or 4 picks if I know where I will be drafting, and Reyes in the first just seems like a bad pick, no matter how I play it out. Not to mention the guy has a history of bad wheels.
So maybe .. I guess it depends upon your draft position. Also I like Furcal a couple rounds later too.
