Hi, LBJackal
I saw your great comment about league commissioners advertising a discriminating league while advertising blindly at the Cafe. Your point is excellent.
After years of mediocre competition I decided to start my own league in '04. With 4 months until the season I felt I'd have plenty of time to qualify my managers.
Recently I've been involved (in another league) in a message board draft (currently in round 8) that is terrific fun not to mention exciting and informative. It's great to have a day to evaluate your next pick rather than 120 seconds.
This type draft will require my league to start as soon as possible...only 126 days left until the season opener. Therefore, I've dropped most of the pre-screening except having frequent access to a computer and the ability to communicate clearly without having to use profanity.
We already have several quality players and I will deal with any managers who flake out or neglect to keep their line-up current.
Once the 2004 season is underway I will have more time to be selective and recruit A-level players. I suspect many first-year leagues, even live draft ones, are less selective that first year.
Again, LBJackal, good point
