How does the Atlanta front office work? Are they secretive like the Giants or do you know exactly what they're doing like the Yankees? It seems to me that replacing Sheffield with a Guillen or Encarnacion is a bit like replacing a Ferrari with a Chevy Cavalier and I find it hard to believe that they'd settle for it. Considering that even if they trade for a good starting pitcher their overall rotation isn't dominant anymore, so they'll need all the offense they can get. But then again, what do I know?
What I do know is, this will probably be the lowest point for salaries possibly for as long as the MLB is in existence. Last year Thome signed for, what, $15 or $16 million a year and Sheffield signed for only $12 to $13 million. Guerrero will probably sign a contract for somewhere in between. That's a hell of a bargain if you ask me. If I were a team with any cash stashed somewhere I'd sign Guerrero if I could.
Erboes, I think you have hit the nail on the head. And, this is why the Giants are being so secretive. Why risk being vocal about what could become one of the best deals of the past decade?
Every team that could have afforded Vlad this offseason, who ends up dropping out of the bidding for his services, is going to be sorry for years to come.
That's why the Mets are really getting me upset, they'll offer an old Mo Vaughan 15 mill, but won't offer Vlad at least that much. Screw the Wilpons. I hope JD can talk them into it. But either way, I am happy the direction they went coaching wise.

Mo is part of the reason that they won't. They are gunshy and don't want to get burned again.

The Expos offered Vladimir Guerrero a five-year contract worth about $70 million yesterday. The deal is backloaded, so Guerrero would initially take a slight cut in pay from the $11.5 million he made last season. He would make about $35 million over the two years. Guerrero probably won't be offered arbitration, so he doesn't have long to make a decision.
Personally I hope/think the Expos will get Vlad back. My original vote was for San Fran but I think I was swayed by Barry's comments about the Giants attaining Vlad.
"Jack, will you call me, if you're able?"
"I've got your phone number written, in the back of my Bible."
my vote is vg and tejada jump ship and go to japan where they are infamous for giving players lifetime deals and the way negotiations are going millwood could be joining them as well.. i cant believe tejada told seattle he wants a 10 year deal..
for real now .. i have no doubts VG remains with the expos
again .... why not montreal .... That was who I voted for almost a month ago ....
Things are shaping up for Montreal to be able to keep Vlad. This will get interesting.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
