November 7, 2003 NEW YORK (Ticker) - With the free agency deadline looming Sunday, four more players, including injured slugger Albert Belle, filed Friday with the Major League Baseball Players Association.
Belle, who has not played since 2000 but remained on the roster of the Baltimore Orioles for insurance purposes, was joined by Arizona Diamondbacks righthander Miguel Batista, Florida Marlins infielder Mike Mordecai and New York Yankees lefthander Felix Heredia.
The four signings push to 210 the number of players who have filed during the offseason. Chicago White Sox infielder Jose Valentin filed but had his option picked up by the team.
Belle is a career .295 hitter with 381 homers and 1,239 RBI but had a stellar career cut down in its prime by a degenerative hip condition.
Batista had his $5 million option declined by the Diamondbacks after a season in which he went 10-9 with a 3.54 ERA. Arizona was hoping to re-sign him at a lower salary.
Mordecai, who had a big three-run double in Game Six of the National League Championship Series, batted .213 with two homers and eight RBI in 65 games for the world champion Marlins.
Heredia declined a $1.7 million player option earlier this month after going 6-3 in 69 games with the Yankees and Cincinnati.

Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
