Taking a far smaller salary and avoiding free agency, relief ace Trevor Hoffman agreed to contractual terms with the Padres today.
"We're very pleased," said General Manager Kevin Towers, who listed keeping Hoffman as his first priority of the offseason.
Hoffman, 36, is guaranteed $2.5 million in 2004. If he finishes a certain number of games, he can lock in a salary of up to $6 million for 2005.
Hoffman was paid $9 million this year. On the disabled list until September after two shoulder operations, the four-time All-Star came back with eight scoreless outings out of nine.
Great news for Padres fans. He is a great closer and should be health and have good #'s, not that Rod Beck was bad, Hoffman is just the better option. And at 2.5 million its a great deal.

not that big of a cut..... 6 million plus his 2 million buyout... Treveor knew he wasn't going anywhere and that seems like a nice package...
With Beck going FA...Looks like a good move for both sides...Just hope he can stay healthy next year.....

The deal only contains $500,000 in incentives, so Hoffman took quite the discount to stay in San Diego. The option for 2005 will become guaranteed if the closer reaches certain performance levels. Padres GM Kevin Towers would not be specific, but he said the numbers should be easily attained if Hoffman has a good season.
