AVG vs OPS

Postby jlm53089 » Mon Feb 12, 2007 4:15 pm

Better batting stat.
My league was going to do 6x6 but couldnt find a suitable pitching stat.
so we have decided to go 5x5.
its down to the last batting stat...
AVG vs OPS.
which is better and why?

Not sure if you decided, but I prefer to use OBP instead of AVG, and SLG instead of HR's. If the choice is only between AVG and OPS, I would probably choose AVG since OPS would be weighting the league towards power hitters with HR's as another category.

I agree with lenny6. OPS is a better indicator of a player's value, since it is a comprehensive statistic with aspects of ability to reach base and hitting with power. But if you're going to use it, why not use it as the only hitting category and eliminate all the others? AVG is a category that doesn't overlap much with the other 4 hitting categories.

Our league went 7x7, basically adding OPS but making it two categories by using OBP and TB.

For pitching, we like adding the holds category. Another category is stretching it, but we use home runs allowed. Another option could be TB allowed.

I noticed Dunn move up in my rankings significantly when I entered a league minus AVG and using OPS instead.

Yeah, there's quite a few guys like that. Swisher, Thomas, and Giambi are a few others.

I'll dissent and say AVG. I like OPS as a sixth cat, but there's a beautiful kind of balance to the traditional 5x5. If you're dead set on dropping AVG, then OBP is better than OPS, having OPS but not average slants the league too much towards one-dimensional sluggers.
