By Tom Krasovic UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER October 30, 2003 wrote:Padres have their eye on re-acquiring Owens

Laying groundwork should they deem Gary Matthews Jr. too expensive, the Padres have told the agent for Eric Owens that Owens is a candidate to join them as a reserve outfielder.

Not until Nov. 10, when free agents can take bids from all clubs, can the Padres negotiate with Owens, who batted .270 for the Angels in 2003.

In 1999 and 2000, Owens was one of the most popular players in Padres history. He was the long shot who made good, a March phenom who later played in 294 games and hustled up 62 stolen bases.

Agent Barry Axelrod confirmed yesterday that "Eric's name has come up" in recent talks with general manager Kevin Towers. "Probably Eric's most enjoyable years in baseball were here in San Diego," Axelrod said. "And he's got a real fondness for Kevin and (manager) Bruce Bochy."

Owens will turn 33 in February. He had a subpar .300 on-base percentage and one home run over 241 at-bats last season.

The Padres hold the negotiating rights to Matthews, who is eligible for arbitration and could command an increase on his $900,000 salary.

The Padres' projected starting outfielders for 2004 – Mark Kotsay, Brian Giles and Ryan Klesko – missed 143 starts last season.

Hmm....
anybody thinking what I am thining ....

Klesko, Kotsay, Giles, and Matthews or Owens...

No way Nady is a 5 th OF, They can't put him in the minors for another year. He has mastered that. Look for this "Scott Boras" client to be traded before spring. I say the winter meetings .....

intereting.. wonder who we get.... I like the fact that Morris is avail. Wonder if STL is interested in Nady.....

I love Nady. I hope he doesn't go anywhere. HELL! Teach him how to catch!

Padres are also going to resign Kingsdale..

I think the signing of these two have nothing to do with what they can do at the plate. Both have proved they can only play in San Diego.

I think they are only signing them to bring some fans back that were alienated by letting them go.
