Halter files for free agency: Infielder Shane Halter officially filed for free agency Tuesday, likely officially ending his Detroit tenure.
Halter hit .217 with 12 homers and 30 RBIs in 114 games of utility duty last year. He hit .251 in four seasons as Tiger, including .284 with 12 homers and 65 RBIs in 2001. That season earned him the starting shortstop's job entering 2002 before Ramon Santiago emerged.
With catcher Matt Walbeck retiring to become manager at Class A West Michigan, Dean Palmer is the only eligible free agent left to decide. Hampered by neck and shoulder injuries the past three years, he has contemplated retirement but could be considering one more go at a return to the field
