help solve a league problem

hi guys, what do you prefer roto or pts league. my league is currently a roto league with the following categories
hitting AVG,SLG,RBI,HR,R,SB,OBP,Fielding % and Ks
Pitching W,L,IP,Saves,K/9,K/BB,ERA,CG,WHIP

i prefer a pts league, i think this roto format has many flaws,one yahoo doesnt allow for W and L in this format so you could theoretically have a team that would have went say 19-3, but doesnt make the playoffs bc the teams ahead of them won by larger margins, its like your awarding style pts for victories. this yr we had two teams who would have had better records then teams who made the playoffs get left out. also i feel this setup hampers you if you want to add a category you must do so on both sides, hitting and pitching

the argument i have gotten against pts is you cant accuratley value pts for pitchin gand hitting. for example how can you put a pt value on wins in comparison to a HR. as a result your potentially allowing one side hitting or pitching have more value then the other.

If you are doing head to head then points is the way to go in most cases.

you couold also to a head to head category league. I.E. your team accumulates wins, Ks, Saves HRs BA ERA etc. The team that wins the most categories in the week gets the W.

I uses standard 5x5 with hits as th tiebreaker...

This "knock" is very accurate. A big problem with points league is imbalance. A lot of people just throw random numbers out there and then hope everything works out. In reality, they often end up creating a system just begging for someone to take advantage of it. At a minimum, the goal of a league should be to create a system where hitters and pitchers are equally valued. Categorical does this by awarding the same number of categories to both hitters and pitchers. Points leagues can do the same, but it's not as easy. You need to take years worth of data, input scoring systems, compare average scores of the Top X hitters verses the Top X pitchers, then tweak until that average is within a reasonable degree of similarity.

If you want an "easy" scoring system, I whole-heartedly recommend going with cats. If you want something a little more accurate and don't mind spending the time on it, you can go with points. It's just a personal choice.
