Jon Daniels promoted to Director of Baseball Operations


The Texas Rangers announced today that Jon Daniels has been promoted to the position of Director of Baseball Operations.
In that role, Daniels will assist General Manager John Hart and Assistant General Manager, Scouting and Player Development Grady Fuson in all areas of baseball operations, including contract negotiations, personnel evaluations and other administrative duties on the major league level.

Daniels, 26, joined the Rangers in January 2002 as a Baseball Operations Assistant and has seen his responsibilities increase significantly over the last year. Prior to his appointment with Texas, Daniels spent the 2001 season as a Baseball Operations Assistant with the Colorado Rockies. He is a graduate of Cornell University.

Texas Rangers agree to terms with RHPs Erik Sabel and Billy Sylvester on Oklahoma contracts with invitations to spring training

The Rangers also announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent righthanded pitchers Erik Sabel and Billy Sylvester on 2004 contracts with Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League. In addition, both players have been invited to the Rangers major league spring training camp as non-roster players.

Sabel, 29, was 2-3 with a 4.94 era and one save in 42 games/2 starts at Tucson in the Arizona system in 2003. He has spent most of his eight-year pro career with the Diamondbacks and was 3-2, 4.38 in 42 games with the world champions in 2001. Overall, Sabel is 3-2, 5.02 in 50 major league appearances, all with Arizona.

Sylvester, 27, had no record and a 3.86 era in 12 games/one start at Richmond and was 1-2, 1.51 in 41 appearances at Greenville in 2003, his seventh season in the Atlanta organization. He ranked second in the Southern League in saves (25) at Greenville in 2002 and has posted 85 career minor league saves.

Arizona Fall League update

The Rangers have a pair of players in the top five in batting in the Arizona Fall League ... OF RAMON NIVAR ranks 4th at .380 (19-50) in 12 games with 1B ADRIAN GONZALEZ 5th at .372 (16-43) in 13 contests ... Gonzalez is also 2nd in the league in on-base percentage (.481), ranks 3rd in slugging (.698) and is tied for 4th in homers (3) and rbi (14) ... IF JASON BOURGEOIS is hitting .242 (8-33) with 2 rbi in 12 games ... Texas pitchers in the AFL: JUSTIN ECHOLS, 0-1, 9.00 (12 er/12 ip) in 4 starts); FRANK FRANCISCO, 2-1, 3.09 (4 er/11.2 ip) in 8 relief appearances; and NICK REGILIO, 0-0, 3.31 (6 er/16.1 ip) in 5 games/4 starts ... All 6 players are with the Peoria Saguaros, who are 11-9 and in 2nd place in the AFL's American Division.

IF DREW MEYER will replace Nivar on the Peoria team, effective November 3 ... Nivar will return to his home in the Dominican Republic due to the birth of his 1st child before he begins playing winter ball there.

Instructional League recap

The Rangers' 2003 Instructional League program concluded at the end of last week ... Individual performances: IF MICAH FURTADO, .400 (14-40); 1B IAN GAC, .318 (14-44), 2 hr, 9 rbi; OF VINCE SINISI, .381 (24-63), 11 rbi; RHP KAMERON LOE, 0.00 (12 r/0 er/12 ip), 12 strikeouts; RHP NICK MASSET, 1.93 (3 er/14 ip), 15 strikeouts; RHP DAVID MAZUREK, 0.82 (2 r/1 er/11 ip).
