David Wells may need another surgery on his ailing back. Although he hasn't been ruled out for this weekend, Wells back was still limiting him yesterday. "The issue he's dealing with, it's the same one that he had repaired prior to us signing him," Yankees GM Brian Cashman said, referring to the problem that cost Wells half of the 2001 season. It's possible that Wells will call it quits this winter rather than go through another extended rehab. The Yankees aren't planning to pick up his $6 million option for 2004.

He's been out of shape for quite awhile. Not a big shock that the Yankees might not pick up his option. He didn't exactly do great this year. 4.14 era hurts, 15 wins is nice, 1.23 whip is reasonable. I'm glad he was on my "do not draft" list last year.

Wells just gets riskier in fantasy drafts each year. He's not a bad pitcher but he refuses to take care of himself. I think at this point in his career, he can only post decent stats if he's with a winning team like the Yankees. If he moves on to say Texas... yikes, stay far far away.
