If memory serves, he had 2: Iron Man and Iron Joe. Both were references to his consistantly leading the league in games pitched and wins during his career.

If I could give partial credit, you'd get it Lofunzo. Unfortunately, part of your answer is a common misconception concerning old Joe.

Fair enough. Is the name correct? Assuming it is, how about that he worked in his father's iron factory? I didn't know which way you were going.

Accepted as answer by Absolutely Adequate on Thu Oct 30, 2003 12:56 am EST.

Well, I don't know if it was his fathers Iron factory, but it was an iron factory. If my memory serves, he didn't start pitching until his late 20s, working at the iron mill until then.

Also, did you know that he pitched 2 complete game shutouts in the same day?
