I'll probably catch some flack for these answers, but off the top of my head I'd go with Roy Halladay and Joe McGinnity. Both guys are reliable and can go the distance (especially Joe). As Pedro ages, he begins to scare me as the day goes on... generally, around the 8th inning.
Today: I'll put in another vote for Halladay. He can go the distance. Second place goes to Zito - if he's had enough rest (grumble grumble).
"The game has a cleanness. If you do a good job, the numbers say so. You don't have to ask anyone or play politics. You don't have to wait for the reviews." - Sandy Koufax
today: Pedro...for the sake of not being bias I will pick a non-redsox as well...and that guy would be Roy Halladay...throws strikes, eats innings, nasty breaking ball...don't count out Jason Schmidt either
All time...toughy...Christy Mathewson and Walter Big Train Johnson are good picks..as is Lefty Grove....but I gotta also go with ridiculously mean Bob Gibson.
new answer, the FUTURE pick...Josh Beckett Josh Beckett Josh Beckett!! Had him on my fantasy team this year and he did awesome and I'm glad to see him flourishing in the post season.
Rest in peace Mitch Hedberg. I name my fantasy team "Buoyancy of Citrus", in your honor.
1968-2005

Jim Palmer: 8-3, 2.60 ERA in 17 Postseason games
Sandy Koufax: .95 ERA! in 8 WS games

Lefty Gomez: 6-0 2.86 ERA in 7 WS games
Orel Hershiser: 8-3 2.66 ERA in 22 Postseason games
Fernandeo Valenzuela: 5-1 1.98 ERA in 9 Postseason games
Active:
'99 Pedro
'98 or '99 El Duque
'95 or '96 Tom Glavine
'96 John Smoltz
'01 Schilling
'01 Johnson
'03 Prior
My all time favorite:
Bob Gibson: 7-2, 1.89 ERA, and 8 CG in the WS!
Absolutely devastated the Red Sox in the '67 Series with 3 wins, all CGs, and one of them being a SHO. And unlike today's pitchers, Gibson did this on what we call "short rest".
just my opinion and I am sticking to it .... It was hard not to put Pedro at Current. But It was current in the question, not based upon 2 years ago. So it made it easier for me.
Prior was just "stupid" amazing this year .... will he get better? Hmm... Scary ..
