White Sox purchase two contracts
CHICAGO -– The Chicago White Sox have purchased the contracts of first baseman Ross Gload from Class AAA Charlotte and right-handed pitcher Enemencio Pacheco from Class AA Birmingham.
Gload, 27, batted .315 (160-508) with 18 home runs and 70 RBI for Charlotte in 2003. The left-handed batter led the International League in extra-base hits (64), ranked second in hits and slugging percentage (.524), tied for second in doubles (40) and finished fourth in average. Gload appeared in a combined 44 major-league games with the Chicago Cubs (2000) and Colorado Rockies (2002), going 14-62 (.226) with two home runs and seven RBI. Gload was acquired from the Rockies on March 31, 2003.
Pacheco, 25, was 12-2 with a 2.56 ERA (43 ER/151.1 IP) in 24 starts at Birmingham. He tied for the Southern League lead in wins, ranked second in ERA and fifth in IP. The 6-1, 170-pounder limited opponents to a .234 (131-561) average, surrendering just five home runs.
Pacheco faced the minimum 27 batters in Game 1 of the Southern League semifinal playoffs against Huntsville, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout. The right-handed pitcher was acquired from the Colorado Rockies on July 29, 2002 in exchange for catcher Sandy Alomar, Jr.
With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 39.
