I present to you...

The consolation bracket fantasy World Series, courtesy of whatifsports.com, a site that lets you simulate games between real or fantasy teams.

I'm going to simulate each game, taking the first plausible result. The engine is imperfect, as it likes to use mediocre relievers for 3 or 4 inning stints. And the rosters also include injured players like Corey Patterson. So, my parameters are:

No starting pitcher pitches over 130 pitches.
No reliever pitches over 2 innings unless long relief or extra innings
No non-roster player appearances.

There is some realism in this, though. Please note that even in this simulation, Grady Little leaves the starting pitcher in for too long, and Nomar goes 0-for-4.

Game 1: Lowe vs. Clement (Sox 4-3)
(http://www.whatifsports.com/mlb/boxscor ... d=11115685)

Game 2. Wakefield vs. Zambrano at Boston
Game 3. Martinez vs. Prior at Chicago
Game 4. Burkett vs. Wood at Chicago
Game 5. Lowe vs. Clement at Chicago
Game 6. Wakefield vs. Prior at Boston
Game 7. Martinez vs. Wood at Boston

I'm thinking Dusty would roll the dice at game 6 and go with Prior on short rest.

Of course, since we're talking about the Cubs, that should probably be 180 pitches... :-D

Seriously, though - great idea! Look forward to seeing the results! ;-D

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if simulation Baker let a pitcher go that long.

I didn't start Damian Jackson over Walker with Lowe on the mound, which Grady Little did about half the time. I will have Mirabelli catching Wakefield, though. Are there lineup quirks about the Cubs I need to know?

I'm presuming that David Ortiz will be the guy that sits when we go without hte DH.

Did you notice that a) the Sox blew a lead in the 9th and b) the winning run came courtesy of a bases loaded balk? A BALK!

Oh what might have been.

btw, I notice that the morning after the real game 1, I see not one post about it. That's as it should be.

I think a better choice for a guy to sit when they lose the DH would be Kevin Millar and have Ortiz playing at first. Millar has/had been slumping and Ortiz, though he hasn't/hadn't been ripping the cover off the ball much recently has at least been better.

Of course...thats probably the only justification you need to leave Millar in there, because computer-grady never would have applied good rationale like that to the situation. God I hate him. not even for leaving Pedro in for too long, its a miracle they won the Oakland series with some of the moves/lineups he was making...but I'll save that venting for another post.
Rest in peace Mitch Hedberg. I name my fantasy team "Buoyancy of Citrus", in your honor.
