POTENTIAL FREE AGENTS (9): Antonio Alfonseca, RHP: Not expected to re-sign with the Cubs.
Doug Glanville, OF: Likely headed elsewhere.
Tom Goodwin, OF: Cubs will make an attempt to bring him back.
Mark Grudzielanek, 2B:Cubs are expected to try and re-sign him.
Eric Karros, 1B: 50-50 chance he returns.
Kenny Lofton, OF: Cubs want him back, but will he accept lesser playing time if Corey Patterson is healthy?
Ramon Martinez, INF: Most likely will be re-signed.
Troy O'Leary, OF: Probably gone.
Dave Veres, RHP: Cubs are interested if the price is right.
PLAYERS WITH OPTIONS (2):
Sammy Sosa, OF: Has the choice of accepting $18 million and returning for another year, or testing the free agent market. His call, but Cubs' playoff run and team's bright future might keep him in Chicago.
Mark Guthrie, LHP: Team option is worth $2 million but uncertain whether the Cubs will exercise it at this point.
ARBITRATION ELIGIBLES (3):
Paul Bako, C: Cubs are expected to sign him.
Matt Clement, RHP:Look for the Cubs to try and sign Clement to a multi-year deal and avoid arbitration.
Randall Simon, 1B: Cubs would like to work something out with him as insurance for Hee Seop Choi, especially if Karros moves on.
Well, Lofton was nice as a lead-off batter, Patterson batted third before his injury, so they need some speed. Martinez isn't the answer here. Ramirez fills in nicely at third but a speedy 2B leadoff hitter would be a perfect fit.
1B will be in good hands with any of the three.
OF Sosa, Alou and Patterson is great, but they need to keep O'Leary or Goodwin or Lofton as backups!

someone along the lines of Luis Castillo?
That's a good point.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....

wrveres wrote:yes, but he has to be considered the top of the list. He will be the player to set the market.
I am pretty sure Boras knew that too when he his people start 'stalking' Luis ......
True. Castillo is the #1 guy on the list, but how many teams are willing to pay big bucks when they can get a quality player a whole lot cheaper? Should be very interesting to watch and see who's willing to cough up the money.

I agree with this assesment here... I'd love to see Choi also. But I can't see Dusty giving him the opportunity. well honest opportunity.
