Roster moves: The Rays sent backup catcher Javier Valentin and infielder Jason Smith outright to Triple-A Durham. They now have the option to become free agents. Also, right-handed pitcher Carlos Reyes has elected to become a free agent.
Valentin, a switch-hitter, hit .222 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 49 games last season.
Smith hit .285 for Durham last season with 20 doubles, 14 triples, 15 home runs and 71 RBIs in 130 games. He made one start for the Rays, going 1-for-4.
Reyes, 34, was with the Rays three different times in 2003. He pitched in 10 games and made three starts. He was 0-3 with a 5.22 ERA. At Durham, Reyes was 10-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 22 games (21 starts).
