breaking the color barrier (answered)

Postby Runnin' Rebel » Mon Jan 01, 2007 5:51 am

WE know Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when he came up with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, paving the way for a legion of Black ballpayers to follow. What major-leaue has the rare distinction of being the first Black ballplayer for not one, but two teams????

After Jackie Robinson debuted in April of 1947, Hank Thompson played second base for the St. Louis Browns later that summer becoming the first Black ballplayer for that franchise. At the end of the season, after 20-odd games, Thompson was sent back to the Negro Leagues where his contract was eventually purchased by the New York Giants where he started the 1949 season as their first Negro player.

Many people think Monte Irvin intergrated the Giants, but Thompson started the first game of the season while Irvin made a pinch-hit apperance in the lid-lifter.
