Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman has signed a four-year contract extension, the team announced Monday.
Financial terms were not announced.
The right-hander is now signed with the Tigers through 2010.
Bonderman was 14-8 with a 4.08 ERA in 34 starts for the Tigers in 2006. He was second in the American League with 202 strikeouts.
"We are thrilled Jeremy Bonderman will remain part of the Tigers organization," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He is developing into one of the top young pitchers in baseball and we expect him to be a big part of our rotation for years to come."
He wasn't due to be a free agent for 2 years but I think this a great signing. The Tigers probably gave a little extra in the 1st 2 years to save a little bit in the last 2. With the way the FA market has been this season who knows what kind of contract Bonderman could have gotten as a free agent. That is of course as long as he keeps progressing.
Good move for the Tigers. Young pitcher with loads of potential. Even if he plateaus, they get a better deal than they would if he hit the market in his mid-20's.
Bonderman likes playing here and was very receptive to signing an extension. I'll take him over Lilly, Zito, Meche, etc any day of the week. It's a good deal for the Tigers.
