What's up with the Black Album bashing?

The Black Album was a great album, and probably greater than Justice and Lighting.

Justice is Lighting, while great albums, are just a weaker version of MoP. Those two albums didn't bring anything new to the table.

The Black Album really brought Speed Metal to the public, and influenced many bands in the future.

Dr. Duran Duran wrote:God, this is so criminal that the Black Album made the cut. I'm guessing most of the people voting here are fairly young or just don't enjoy true thrash metal for what it's really worth. Truth be told, if you told me that anyone else had made the Black Album, I'd say it was a great piece of work. The fact that it was a follow up to one of the greatest metal albums ever makes is it a mediocre Metallica album. I don't care what the sales numbers say, Black Album is not Metallica's shining conquest.

There's 2 kinds og good. Good for that genre of music fans and good for the general public. And there's a reason why the Black Album is their most commercially successful CD.

Because the mainstream is full of boneheads who live on life support hooked up to the dialysis machine called MTV and can't absorb wonderfully complex thrash metal?

The Black album might not be as thrashy as Ride the Lightning or and justice for all. But it's not like it didn't get any critical acclaim, it may not have made metalheads like you too happy that they are so called "commercializing" their music. But it does fits the taste of the general public(non-metalheads, like me) better.

an unrelated question, is it just me or is Ride the Lightning so similar to Master of Puppets?

I forgot to address this yesterday, but here it is. I never said that The Black Album was a bad album, but it's a misnomer to label that as metal, as it was simply too streamlined from the classic albums that preceded it, to the point it lost that thrash feeling. I enjoyed The Black Album, as a hard rock album, and believe me, it's light years better than Load and Reload. The primary reason The Black Album is designated as metal is just because Metallica's reputation at the time prior to that album was a frontrunner in thrash metal.

I think Master of Puppets was more polished-sounding than Ride the Lightning and that's the main difference between the two.

As for the rankings of The Black Album being highly rated, well, I take those rankings with a grain of salt. I mean there are rock album lists that would also mix music that really isn't rock music and rank it next to or higher than music such as Metallica. You just can't tell me Metallica's Black Album was better than any of Death's albums, from a metal purist perspective because Black Album was recorded more for the mainstream than say, Death's Scream Bloody Gore was, which was more or less projected at the bastion of thrash metal fans who needed a spike or two in the harshness level.

Just because The Black Album wasn't really thrash, doesn't make it not metal. Play it to someone whose main taste is any other genre, and they'll identify it as metal instantly. As I said before, it's heavier than Back In Black ever was.

The key to what you said, was play it to someone whose taste isn't mainly metal. Like I said, the term heavy metal can be a misnomer and it can be thrown onto a style of music that's hard in a distorted fashion, to the point that even Limp Bizkit and Poison are considered metal. On a sidenote, I don't consider Back in Black as metal either. AC/DC is hard rock, but then again, it's all relative to anyone's taste, as to what band gets classified as such, although I think there should be re-definition to what heavy metal is (from my perspective).
