I only do live auctions. If I really want a prime player I never participate in the bidding until it appears that it is about to end. For instance, if the bid is $30.00 on David Wright and the auctioneer is calling the bid down - going, going, I bid $31.00 before the player is sold.

The reason is two fold. Let the other bidders get cuaght up in the bidding frenzy and second, sometimes there is a psychological affect upon a bidder who has been bidding and thinks he won. When he hears the last bid by me he gets discouraged or flustered and stops bidding.
