Butler could be in the big leagues on opening day if the Royals were ready to give up on him as a fielder. His bat is certainly ready and I don't think he's at least a year away. I'd say at most a year away. Aside from that though, I'd take Hermida, though it's close. Hermida at least has the security of playing a position where I ultimately think Butler will be a DH and that will of course limit his value.

i'd say Butler has the upside of a Travis Hafner type of player. Sure that's the absolute best he can be, but even to have that potential is great. Sure his defense is below average, but Manny is no great shakes in the field either, but he makes due. Hermida on the other hand was a top prospect coming into last year but his stock really took a hit with his subpar performance only some of which can be attributed to injuries. I see a solid bounceback for Hermida, something like Coco Crisp's last year in Cleveland, but in this case I would gamble and take Butler.

I'd take Hermida, but boy do I wish its Butler by a landslide!!

for fantasy purposes i'd go with butler. he seems to have more power potential, which is generally more reliable than stolen bases. would you still want hermida if he was only getting 5-10 stolen bases a year?

Depends on your needs. If position & need to win this year is not as important, go with Butler. Butler will most likely be DH in KC.

That would imply that you think Hermida is gonna smack 30 hr's this year or something. i think that is a big reach.

Butler obviously has a better bat than hermida for fantasy purposes. Hermida is more attractive however because he has an opening day job in an improving lineup and can run a little. When both are established players in the MLB butler will outshine hermida at the plate.
