i just don't think it's good practice to make your main character an idiot who's impossible to root for.

The main character has to be somebody you want to root for?

in a movie like that? i doubt the writers were trying to create a character who i was hoping would die throughout the movie.

no, i'm calling the masses retarded.

Which is why a movie with pretty colors is nominated for best picture.

I assume you are referring to Avatar...If you look at what James Cameron did (I am not praising the plot/script/etc), but his motion-capture filming technique has never been done before. The combination of live shots with completely artificial environments is pretty much flawless. I am not saying it should win Best Picture, but it had all of its success for a reason...

It was a down year, indeed. I would have reluctantly given it to Inglourious Basterds, but that says more about the quality of the competition than anything.

the beginning and end of inglourious basterds were awesome, but the middle had too many scenes that were way too drawn out and boring. if they had just spent the movie focused on the Basterds running around and killing nazis it would have been awesome.

Shutter Island 8.5/10
Great movie, great job for the genre, psychological thriller. I won't post any spoilers, but if anybody wants to discuss the ending, shoot me a PM I'm game. I thought the final line was awesome and really completed the movie. As for the movie as a whole, I thought the acting was great, directing was great and it was a great movie. I definitely will rewatch at some point. It is not for the weak at heart though, there are some gory/graphic scenes, some of which involve children, but if you have a strong stomach and especially if you like psychological thrillers, then you'll love this ;-D
