Kudos on Shawshank, easily one of the best films ever made. My all time favorite is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest followed closely by Shawshank. ;-D

You need to watch the older classics for what they are worth and not attempt to compare them to movies today.

Star Wars FTW.

maybe i'm too young to relate to the older movies or something, but all of the movies i listed are so vastly superior to any old movies i've seen that i don't see the point in watching the older movies "for what they are worth".

Thats exactly his point....and "vastly superior?" OK now you're just being silly. :-b

well seeing as those are some of my favorite movies, and i've thought pretty much every old movie i've seen is pretty awful, its pretty easy to see why i think the one's i listed are vastly superior.

i did take a class on the vietnam war my freshman year of college where we watched a lot of movies about the war, and i thought most of those were pretty awesome.

platoon
full metal jacket
apocalypse now
the deer hunter

do those count as old movies?

I'll agree with Shawshank, Star Wars (esp. Empire), and Indiana Jones (esp. Raiders).

Based off your movie tastes, I'll recommend the older war classics (i.e. The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Guns of Navarone) or adventure tales like the original Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn 1938) and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Mine, too. Shawshank is also probably in my top 10.

Check out one of Kubrick's older works, Paths of Glory if you liked Full Metal Jacket. It's a bit dated for your tastes, but for the sake of seeing what Kubrick's older material looked like, it's worth a go.

Cool, again just try to enjoy it for what it is though without comparing it to newer films like it. Remember films like it paved the way for the ones you enjoy today. Also like Art said you should also check out The Bridge on the River Kwai and The Guns of Navarone. Both awesome films. ;-D
