Pretty Persuasion - a dark comedy with Evan Rachel Wood playing the done-to-death Sweet Girl With a Genius Level IQ Who's Really An Evil Tramp plots to set up her teacher (Office Space's Ron Livingston) on sexual harrasment charges. some darkly funny scenes but nothing special...although i'm sure 15 year old girls would love it
6/10

Boxing Helena David Lynch's daughter directs this "love story" starring Julian Sands (i only recall him from Warlock like 15 years ago) and Sherilynn Fenn :-L where Sands character becomes obsessed with Fenn to the point that he does everything he can to keep her (Kathy Bates in Misery has nothing on this guy). still...it wasnt all that great and has that Lynchian feel...which always make me think i'm "not getting it"

Tropic Thunder was a brilliant movie. 8.75/10 (it lost 0.25 for that stupid Tivo-throwing part at the end). This is the first time I've EVER respected Ben Stiller as an actor, and Brandon Soo Hoo is the most bad-ass movie character I've seen in a LONG time. 8-o

brilliant indeed. the tivo throwing part is supposed to be stupid. the movie basically becomes what it makes fun of at the end, it's genius.

^^Is it bad that I started taking it seriously? :-o Like, it's all hilariously outlandish but at least it makes sense, except for the Tivo thing.

American Psycho - 7.5/10

Watched it after realizing I'll have to wait 8 1/2 more months for a new season of Dexter. Good movie but falls short of Dexter in every way possible, I guess Bateman was the prototype and Dexter was the final, refined product. If I evaluated it solely on its own merits it might be better, but screw it I'm not a movie critic.

American Psycho and Dexter aren't that similar. I do think some elements of Bateman were borrowed and incorporated into the T.V. version of Dexter but other than that... Very different stories and themes. Or am I missing something?

Unfortunately I've never seen Dexter (though from what I've heard, I'm sure I'd like it). As for American Psycho (one of my favorite movies and an even better book), it's really a satire on the 1980's rather than a story about a serial killer. Patrick Bateman is first and foremost a yuppie with a serious case of narcissistic personality disorder. The fact that he murders people (or maybe just imagines it??) is secondary.

I highly recommend the book. Much more graphic than the film and funnier as well. Whole chapters dedicated to Bateman's analysis of Huey Lewis, Whitney Houston, Madonna, and Genesis make for interesting reading. ;-D

Valkyrie - 7/10

Pretty good, and saw it with my friend who is a WWII historian, and she says it's accurate enough to keep most people from getting angry. Cruise wasn't spectacular, nor was anybody, really, but I think it was well done and worth seeing as a rental.
