…the more i talk with people about Barry Zito, i grow more confident he will eventually sign the Mets…
…this is a good thing, because, while i was once unsure of the move, i grow more convinced with each passing day that he is exactly what the Mets need, regardless of cost…
…the sense i get is that when zito’s agent, Scott Boras, met with the Mets, on two occasions while in orlando, the sides discussed a general idea of what each party hoped to accomplish, such as the Mets not having any interest in giving a guaranteed sixth year in a deal, which you can assume will be available, though, as an easily attained player option…i do not believe the two sides discussed specific dollar amounts, though my hunch is the Mets will make an official proposal when and if the two sides meet next week…
…from zito’s side, it is becoming quite clear that he favors either pitching near his home in southern california, or new york city, where he can take advantage of all sorts of opportunities, inside and outside of baseball…plus, the Mets are in the pitcher-friendly national league…in my opinion, he would be a fool to pitch in texas, and frankly he is smart enough to know this without me writing it at MetsBlog…
…as i have been writing all week, in the end, i hope to see zito sign with the Mets for what will most likely be a guaranteed five-year deal at a lot more money per year than he was initially thinking, while getting a sixth year option, maybe even a seventh year option to appease his agent, allowing the pitcher to join a staff that is in dire need of his services…
…the sooner this happens the better…
