i dont think the father would not be supporting the child, just his family right? thats the way i understood this, and i think its a pretty obvious answer that the mother should keep the kid. if you really wanted to punish them you should have asked if they would have sex with their mother to save their father's life...now thats a question....

If the father's family were diabolical freaks, as all rich people are of course, then the mother should run like hell with her kid and protect him. Or possibly choose to be an adult and get along with her husband so the child could grow up without trauma. But that's just crazy talk......
I think you might be reading too much into the question. If I bring up Hitler, am I suggesting that all Germans are evil? Of course not.
Also, I don't think you fully understand the question. The parents get along as amiably as possible, given the situation. It's the in-laws that are the problem.
A three year old would definitely have an opinion on this. Trust me, three year olds have opinions on everything and know what they want.
The three year old would want to see both parents (provided that neither one is horrible to him) and is not that interested in material things (of course they always want new things but a $2 McDonalds happy meal toy is just as interesting to him as a playstation).
The mother should tell the father what a horrible thing his parents have suggested and appeal to his good nature to ensure that they share custody and that the child has all of his needs seen to - he doesn't need luxury or the promise of a Harvard education. He needs his basic needs seen to, both parents in his life and enough attention and care that he grows up to be a happy well adjusted kid.
