Old School Hip Hop Fans...A Lil' Help?

Postby BxBombers951 » Wed Nov 22, 2006 8:51 pm

i really wanna make myself a mix of old school hip hop (since i really cant stand any of this snap yo fingers chicken noodle soup nonsense). the one catch is i want it to all be songs u can just chill to, you know what im talkin about - relaxed rhyming with a soft beat. ive got 3 songs so far but i have a hard time goin back into my memory. any ideas?

the 3 songs i got are doin it by ll, juicy by biggie, and electric relaxation by a tribe called quest

(eh ik i said old school, but ill also take suggestions of newer stuff - not that lil john garbage, im talkin real hip hop)

Sounds like you want some old Dr. Dre from his album The Chronic, some old Snoop Dogg from the same period, some Public Enemy, some stuff from The Roots, and definitely if you wanna just chill, A Tribe Called Quest.

Newer stuff I listen to mostly Atmosphere, which I highly recommend. Some other good newer stuff is K-OS (Joyful Rebellion Album), RJD2 (Dead Ringer is my favorite album), and also check out Blue Scholars (they are out of Seattle, WA. They have a lot of very "chill" stuff on their self-titled album).

Older stuff I enjoy Public Enemy, 213, Snoop, N.W.A., among others...

I was going to suggest A Tribe Called Quest also.

De La Soul are old school hiphop.

Outkast's ATLiens album is pretty laid back also. Real nice beats.

I know the definition of "old school" depends a lot on a person's age, but...none of the music mentioned so far really fits any description of "old school" that most people with a little knowledge about hip-hop would consider valid. Anyway, here's a few more that aren't really old school, but I think you might like judging from the examples you gave. I'm not at home right now or I'd list more, but hopefully you'll be able to check some of these out:

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother
DFC - Things in tha Hood
Any of De La's first three albums
Any of Tribe's first three albums
Any of EPMD's first three albums
Digable Planets - Reachin
Either of The Pharcyde's first two albums
Souls of Mischief - '93 til Infinity
Black Moon - Enta da Stage
Black Sheep - A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Main Source - Breaking Atoms
Ultramagnetic MCs - Critical Beatdown
Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda
Del - I Wish My Brother George Were Here

Also, there was a previous thread asking for hip hop suggestions, I know I posted a pretty long list in there...as did others. It might be worth searching for that one.
