Scioscia and hitting coach Mickey Hatcher met with Matthews before Wednesday's game in Texas and then Scioscia benched Matthews in favor of Juan Rivera. Matthews has batted .191 (13-for-68) in his past 22 games, dragging his average for the season down to .236.
