I was curious how Matthews jr has hit at the Angels Stadium in the past. Over the last 3 years, in 77 at bats, he has a .633 OPS there. Quite a bit lower than what he produced at Arlington Stadium: .800 something OPS in over 650 at bats. Methinks that the Angels are going to be a tad disappointed.
This is the worst signing of the year so far. Unless Schmidt gets $16 mil/year, I can't see a worse signing out there. Do GM's know that much more than we do? Or that much less?

They gave him a five year, $50m contract. How on earth are they going to trade that if he tanks? Getting him to agree to it would be a tiny part of the problem.

I really hope the Padres put their checkbook away till all of this stupid chit dies down, this market has gone nuts.
wow one of the worst deals ive EVER seen. the sad part is, i sorta saw it coming....did he really get rewarded for 1 good hitting season and one amazing home-run robbing catch?

LA Angels, just paid $50 million for a 32-year old guy that has had one good year in 11 seasons, has been placed on waivers by other teams 3 times, is on his 7th team, has a career .263 BA, 78 career homers.
IThis makes the Tigers signing and extention with Sheffield look better and better. And the Tigers didn't have to give up a draft pick.I think I would rather have Sheff at 41 than Matthews at 37. When the contracts are done. But in todays market if the Angels didn't pay it sombody else would have. He'll help the Angels all the way around.
