Angels sign Gary Matthews 5/$10M

As an A's fan, I'm glad to see the Angels blow a lot of money on Gary Matthews, but it's a terrible deal from a different perspective. For all we know, Matthews could suck it up and lose the job.

Oh well. CFs who can hit are expensive, so I don't think this is that bad. Certainly not nearly as bad as the Pierre deal!

I disagree. Matthews had a .866 OPS in a hitter's heaven with a stacked lineup at age 32, in his first full season. This deal is worse than Pierre's.

When I read the title, I thought he was getting $2 million a year over 5 years, and I thought, 'wow nice deal.'

Then I opened the thread and saw that he's making $10 mill a year. Wow. Awful deal.

I wonder if they realize Matthews will be 37 and making 10 million a year during the last year of his contract? Obviously they do not. I firmly believe he'll be well below average in offense and defense by that time.

If things keep on this pace, $10M will be well below average by that time.

Does anybody (especially Angels fans) heard anything about what will happen to Figgins?

Is he gonna get traded? Is he gonna play third? Will he get to lead off or hit at the bottom of the order?

As a Figgins owner, this signing is very concerning

It's a catch-22. They needed to add some bats, but the market is thin with good players and they are signing for insane amounts. I'd rather have gone with Aramis and offered him more than the Cubs, but what else are they to do?

They could sign nobody of importance to avoid a huge contract and not improve their team? That would be a poor decision as well. Who knows maybe in 2 or 3 years this is a good deal when players are signing for 20 million again.
